This week I’m sharing another snippet from Trouble in Disguise, Eclipse Heat Book 6.
“If you’re an orphan with no people, where’d you get the name Beauregard?” Deacon asked.
Miri suspected if she didn’t answer he’d find something else to query her about, so she told him.
“I never had a last name until a couple years back. I was choppin’ wood in a place named Beauregard, Louisiana. I fancied the name so I decided I’d take it with me when I moved on. It’s the longest I ever heard. I figured it fit me cause of my size, you know what I mean.”
“McCallister is longer,” Deacon said mildly, and then added, “there’s nothing wrong with your size.”
Trouble in Disguise © Gem Sivad 2016
Since both his partners have married and retired from the hunt, Deacon McCallister is alone when he visits the Pleasure Dome, an infamous brothel in Fort Worth’s Hell’s Half Acre. He’s tracking a counterfeiter but what he finds is TROUBLE—dressed in a man’s ruffled shirt and nothing more.
Bounty hunter Miracle Beauregard calls herself Beau and for years has fooled the general public about her gender. But underneath Miri’s disguise, beats a feminine heart in lust for Deacon McCallister. Though she spends a lot of time dreaming about her rival, she never expects to act upon her longings.
When Miri follows an outlaw to the fanciest whorehouse in Texas and crosses paths with her heart’s desire, she trades her buckskins for bare skin to play the part of Deacon’s paid companion. But, she’s wrong when she thinks her time with Deacon will be just once. After she leaves her bounty hunter rival behind, she discovers he’s so enthralled by his one night lover, he’s on the hunt to find her again—and he’s got forever on his mind.

Sounds like Deacon might be smitten with her. Great excerpt! 🙂
Okay, this was pretty cool. I’d keep that last name! What a cool way to introduce that idea. 🙂
This book sounds awesome. Can wait to read it. Love your writing wish more of your books were paperbacks. I’m saving to buy a Kindle, so soon it won’t matter.
Innuendos by the dozen and oh Gem, so good. Terrific, snippet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love her voice- and the premise for the story sounds awesome!
I LIKE it, cool way to acquire an elegant last name (also love her reasoning). Enjoyed the excerpt!
He counts letters quickly!
I’m glad he likes her size.
Awesome dialogue, Gem. Gives the sense of a duel between fencers with thrust and parry.
Was that the truth or did she make it up on the spot? Either way it was great! Love the premise for this story.
That she never had a last name makes me very curious about her background. She sounds like a great character.
I love the way she’s created her identity. And even more how quick Deacon is quick to point out his name might be better. One-ups-manship or an offhand proposal? I love these characters!
Cute last line. I love her story of how she got her last name but am curious as to how she never had one.
He sure picked a hard name to spell. “Smith” would’ve been easier.
He likes what he sees, and wants her to feel good about herself too, I think. Nice snippet.
I like this and love the story about her name!
If you don’t have a name, take it. Sounds like a plan to me!
I like that last line … it says so much more.
Looks like an interesting story! 🙂
Ya I’d totally take that last name. Great snippet.
Nice last line, very sneaky of him. I love how she acquires her last name, it’s very meaningful and can speak a lot about who she is and how she views herself. Great snippet.
“McCallister is longer”? is that a way to propose?
