Greetings fellow warriors, readers, and snippeteers. Happy (and safe) Halloween @ you!
Today I’m sharing a snippet from Blood Stoned, a new Maggie Jenks (Jinx) title.
“Concentrate,” I muttered, frustrated by my latest attempt to master the mage-light spell.
I finally produced a light but as I sat cross-legged on my narrow cot, willing the sputtering flame to cooperate and not catch the cabin on fire, it skidded across the ceiling, leaving a scorched trail.
Just as I thought I had it under control, the soft sound of something brushing against the window pane interrupted my focus, and the unruly light careened in that direction.
“Behave,” I ordered; but my snarl changed to a gasp when outside the window, two sets of tiny glowing eyes stared back at me. It was the darkest part of the night, and no moonlight remained to illuminate my visitors.
Reluctantly, I moved closer and used magic to penetrate the darkness on the other side of the glass.
Every hair on my body stood in sheer terror at what my true sight revealed. Bats—hundreds, maybe thousands of the creatures flew in the air and scuttled across the ground around the cabin.
Blood Stoned (full story) will be posted on my blog next week. Check back, or better yet, hit the “Subscribe” button in the upper right corner of this page to get emailed updates.

oooooohhh…. can’t wait to read the full story!!! great job on that cliffhanger !
Good heavens! That’ll definitely get your attention. I love bats, but not in huge quantities. Great snippet, Gem.
That’s spooky! What are all these bats doing here?
What great atmosphere! Loved it.
You painted a great visual there with your words Gem. That would scare the crap out of me!
History Sleuth’s Milk Carton Murders
I’m wondering if she called them up herself or if they’ve been sent by some nefarious other. Very nicely (and creepily) done. Will definitely check back on this one.
Eerie! Great imagery! Can’t wait to read this.
Eeek! Not bats!!!!
Freaky deaky! That would make me nervous, how will she react? Looking forward to the next eight!
That’s it! You scared me enough to turn my tinted hair back to gray. One helluva an eight, thanks very much, Gem
Ooh wonderful, spooky snippet! I really enjoyed the imagery and tension in this piece!
I love your imagination and detail. The picture you picked is so perfect too.
A bat visitation (All The Bats!) is perfect for Halloween Week, Gem!
(Where’s a girl’s familiar when she needs him? 😀 )
Are they really bats? Or vampires?
Oh WOW, spooky (and perfect for Halloween week). I was amused by her attempts with the fire and then the mood swung dramatically with those *eyes*. Great snippet!
Oh I want to know more of this magical world and I love the character. Strong and sassy.
Okay, time to get out of there. Lovely atmosphere.
eeeek! Scary, very intense scene, good job.
Nicely drawn. The pace is just right & that last image of the assembled bats is a strong one.
great visual …. but bats? Yuck! 🙂
Gave me chills.
Nice! I love bats, but I’m not so sure about these particular bats! You did a great job giving us an idea of the protagonists skill with magic and where they are in their mage development. This should serve well with the rest of the story I expect!
Oh, Maggie is still having problems with that pesky magic! I wonder where her big cat is. This 8 is downright riveting, Gem, and I can hardly wait to read the book! 🙂
