Hi, everyone. Think Spring.
For Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors this week, I’m sharing eight more sentences from Ursus Horribilis, my next Bitter Creek Holler title, due out March 16th.
A shaggy monster leaned against the building, the better to hear the witch inside. Admittedly, the house’s ward had jolted him with a shot of power that curled his beast hair and left it smoking.
But, he wasn’t a grizzly for nothing. Instead of retreating, he’d risen on hind legs, and pressed his massive frame against the building, absorbing the sting of aggressive magic until it ceased.
There he remained with his ear to the wall, mesmerized by the sound of her voice. Every Buchanan man knew that shifter magic didn’t mesh well with witchery, and when the witch also happened to be a Hess woman, confrontation was ill-advised. Actually, he’d been told to tuck tail and run.
But here he was, snuffling her scent from the air and mewling inside like a cub.

Sounds great! Can hardly wait to read the book. 🙂
Thanks for the look. I love bear shifters
I LOVE the title as well as the last line of your snippet, Gem. I definitely want to read this one. 😀
Oh boy, he’s going to be pudding in her hands. he’s already melting into a puddle. lol As always, Gem, you seamlessly infuse a million tiny details into your words, setting atmosphere, building character. Always a pleasure to read. 🙂
That last line is awesome!
Of course, he has to be attracted to what is dangerous and forbidden, otherwise what would be the fun in that.
And when all is said and done, under all that grizzly hair, he is after all just a man sniffing around a woman and “mewling like a cub” (LOVE that description!)
Very atmospheric, great imagery too, I can ‘see’ him, and his reactions, clearly.
Bears in love! Or one of them. 🙂
Now, all he has to do is convince a Hess woman to take a chance on him before she fries all his hair off.
(I love the title, too, but he’s really more of a “Gruffus adorabilis”! 😀 )
Oh, yay! I LOVE bear shifters!!! Can’t wait to read this one!:)
gotta love the bear shifters. They’re cuddling and loving. perfect heroes
In love with this snippet. Definitely want more.
Love that cover! Another great snippet. As Gemma said, I can really see him and feel what he’s feeling. Hope he doesn’t push her house over.
Aw, he just wants to be her teddy bear! I wonder how they’re going to be able to work through the barriers between them.
Oh, he has it bad if all warnings to stay away from her are being ignored. Love it!!
Some Teddy Bear who can blow the house down. You didn’t miss a word painting the scene to perfection. A lesson to be learned for all writers. Are we listening and learning? I am. Thanks, Gem.
Oh I LIKE it. He’s strong, yet his vulnerability shows through.
Great snippet. I especially like the last line. He has it bad. 🙂
Fabulous snippet. Love how he listens as a bear and the way you’ve describe the danger of getting involved with a Hess witch. Great job.
Oh I LOVE it. The mental picture of this great big grizzly bear shifter being so enamored of the witch within is wonderful. Excellent excerpt!
Interesting! The image of that powerful creature reduced to feeling like the cub is very intriguing. Want more please!
The last line is fab.
I’d have to agree, the last line is great! I love the language you use to convey the bear’s feelings, can’t wait to read more.
Love the image of a grizzly bear using his bulk to absorb magic. Yet another reason to fear those beasties!
“Shaggy”, is one of my favorite adjectives. This is a fun snippet.
Tuck tail and run … love it. Great snippet!
