A snippet from Five Card Stud, Eclipse Heat 5:
“She sellin’ it?” Sam frowned and asked Susie, one of the whores in the bar. He didn’t think the answer was yes, but if so, he had plenty of cash in his saddlebag and didn’t much care what bedding the lady gambler might cost.
“You buyin’ if she is?” Susie answered, giving him a disgusted look. “You men are all the same.”
“She sellin’ it, Susie?” Sam repeated his question as he drank his beer, ignoring the woman’s complaint.
“Yer out of luck,” the saloon girl sighed, answering him wryly. “She don’t have a reputation for bein’ an easy woman.”
I should be disappointed. Instead, Sam’s jaw relaxed and the knot in his stomach uncoiled.

Sam McCallister enjoys looking at Eden Pace across a poker table. She has to be the prettiest woman he’s ever seen, smart too, and the best card sharp he’s ever likely to meet. He has no doubt the lady gambler thinks she’ll win in their game of five card stud. He’s got a hole card that says she won’t–a Wanted for Murder poster with Eden’s picture on it.
Eden’s doing her own outlaw hunting. She’s on the trail of the man who killed her husband. Though she’d like to forget the past and let Sam McCallister give her a future, she won’t do it. She’ll bring her husband’s murderer to justice or die trying. When Sam gets in the way of her goal, she uses seduction to free herself. But the hard-headed bounty hunter keeps dogging her steps, blurring the line between pursuer and protector.
Eden’s got more trouble than Sam chasing her. She’s using herself as bait to unmask a master criminal. The monster knows who she is, and he wants her dead. But Sam’s not about to lose the woman he loves. He’s pushing all the limits in their high stakes game. With hearts on the table and death on the line, nothing is certain until the last card’s played.

I love that he’s relieved that she’s not selling her body.
There’s irony in that. Great snippet, Gem. 🙂
🙂 Last line is great.
Great snippet–I liked the last line, too.
I like the fact that he doesn’t really know how he feels or what he actually wants until it hits him in the gut. Great voice and descriptions.
Though it sounds like he’d buy it, if she was sellin’ it. 🙂 Great last line!
He’d rather work for it than buy it. Love it!
He should be, but I think not. Great snippet!
Ah Gem, this is damn fine writing. When I’m out of this rehab, it goes right on my Kindle.
Good – he’s glad!
Well, it seems he wanted her easy all for himself. I guess he’ll just have to work for it then.
Good answer! I like that the story is taking some unexpected twists and turns (but yours always do, which is part of what makes them so enjoyable)! Excellent excerpt, can’t wait to see what happens next for these two.
Great dialogue and great internal reactions. This is a very interesting snippet!
His conflicted feelings speak volumes. Great snippet!
The fact that he’s relieved she’s not a loose woman speaks volumes about his character. And maybe about his intentions! Great snippet as always, Gem!
I suspect he’s relieved because he’d like to have her all to himself…
Great last line. great conflict!
The fact he’s relieved by that statement makes me think he cares for this girl. Nice snippet.
You write outstanding characters, Gem! Can hardly wait to read it. Just pre-ordered it. 🙂
Hahaha! My computer is running slow–it’s dying, actually. Anyway, Amazon loaded so slowly that I had already left my comment here and when I went back to Amazon to close that tab–I was reminded that I’d already purchased this item.
Holy cow, Gem! I’m so looking forward to it that I tried to buy it twice. 🙂
Thank you (again). 😀
