“Gawk at something else besides me,” Naomi told Charlie, exasperated at his boldness when he held out his hand, indicating it was time for her to quit the water. He snorted at her attempt at modesty and wrapped the blanket around her, rubbing the drying cloth across her hair before scooping cream from a tin and plopping it onto her head.
“Work that into the snarls, then rinse it out.”
“What’s in it?” she asked suspiciously, sniffing the mixture that smelled like him, or at least the spicy wood scent she associated with him.
“What difference does it make; just rub it in your hair.”
“You make this?” she asked after she’d rinsed his concoction from her head and discovered the snarls had disappeared.
“No, my mother makes it for me,” he growled.
“You have a mother?” she blurted, surprised because he didn’t look like a man with a mother, let alone a mother who made beauty products for his hair.
“Did you think I was born in a cave with wolves?”
Naomi ignored Charlie’s sarcasm because frankly, she could picture him living in a cave with wolves.

Miss Naomi Parker, deportment instructor at the Sparrow Creek Young Ladies Academy, can’t forgive herself for hiding during an outlaw attack. When the local sheriff refuses to pursue the gang of renegades who kidnapped her students, she decides to rescue the girls herself. But, she needs the help of the best tracker in the territory—half-Kiowa bounty hunter, Charlie Wolf McCallister.
Before he goes out on another bounty hunt, Charlie wants a long soak in a hot bath, a bottle of whiskey, and the pleasure of a woman’s company. He has two out of three when a school marm with cornflower-blue eyes invades his privacy.
After he explains that he only works for pay, Miss Parker offers Charlie one night of sexual favors in exchange for his tracking services. Though he knows bedding a white woman will cause all kinds of trouble, he operates on the philosophy that a bird in hand is better than no bird at all.
After they’ve sealed their bargain, Charlie tries to leave Naomi safely behind. But the opinionated teacher insists on accompanying him. She’s impatient with his decisions, questions his authority, and generally ignores his warnings. But each time they make love, Naomi captures another piece of Charlie Wolf’s heart.
When one straight-laced spinster tenders her body to one cynical sometimes savage, the unexpected bounty is love.

A fun snippet indeed and surprising, which is always a good thing 🙂
Haha, very cute! It takes a strong man to give hair care products the credit they deserve!
Fantastic snippet, Gem. I love this glimpse of Charlie. Must. Read. This. 🙂
So funny. She could actually picture him living in a cave with wolves….but the man has a dynamite detangler. Complex. Awesome! This is going to be fun!
Love the last line! I like the banter between these two. They seem to get under each other’s skin easily, but I’m guessing they also wouldn’t say they *hate* each other. More like a mutual dislike perhaps. These two are going to be fun to watch.
Very cute scene. I like it when characters reveal unexpected aspects of their personalities … like the existence of a mother. 😉
“Did you think I was born in a cave with wolves?” <<< This line had me cracking up! Great snippet.
haha “You have a mother” doesn’t everyone has one, in a way?
