A snippet from Five Card Stud, Eclipse Heat 5:
They played three hands; Sam won the first, Eden the second, then on the third, he pushed his stack of bills and coins into the center of the table.
“I don’t have that much, Sam, I’m afraid I’ll have to decline.” Tempted, but recognizing the predator beneath his amiable pose, she scooted her chair back, deciding to end the game.
“I’ll make it easy, my pile against your pile and you throw in your jewelry, including that fancy ring on your finger.”
“This ring?” she asked, flashing the impressive emerald at their audience. “I’m afraid you don’t have enough cash to cover this jewel, Mr. McCallister. Besides, it’s a family heirloom I could never part with.” Again she attempted to leave, half standing this time.
“I think you’ll change your mind, pretty lady, when I put the deed to some property I own in the pot.”
When Eden unfolded the paper Sam slid across the table, she gazed at her picture staring up from a Wanted for Murder poster.

Sam McCallister enjoys looking at Eden Pace across a poker table. She has to be the prettiest woman he’s ever seen, smart too, and the best card sharp he’s ever likely to meet. He has no doubt the lady gambler thinks she’ll win in their game of five card stud. He’s got a hole card that says she won’t–a Wanted for Murder poster with Eden’s picture on it.
Eden’s doing her own outlaw hunting. She’s on the trail of the man who killed her husband. Though she’d like to forget the past and let Sam McCallister give her a future, she won’t do it. She’ll bring her husband’s murderer to justice or die trying. When Sam gets in the way of her goal, she uses seduction to free herself. But the hard-headed bounty hunter keeps dogging her steps, blurring the line between pursuer and protector.
Eden’s got more trouble than Sam chasing her. She’s using herself as bait to unmask a master criminal. The monster knows who she is, and he wants her dead. But Sam’s not about to lose the woman he loves. He’s pushing all the limits in their high stakes game. With hearts on the table and death on the line, nothing is certain until the last card’s played.

A very enticing snippet, I feel like I was sitting at the table. Good job.
Well, that’s one way to capture her attention.
I am with Ed, he certainly got her attention. But, what game is he playing?
Ooh, great twist! Loved the back-and-forth between them.
Sneak attack there!
Dang! He wins the hand before it’s played! Best of luck on your launch.
Now that’s not a nice place to leave us! I imagine that’s got her attention even more than it’s got mine.
Uh oh, what a way to end the snippet! Very effective and she’d going to have to win this hand or else. Really intrigued by the story. (By the way, this gray-on-gray font in the comment box is nearly impossible for me to read.)
Outstanding snippet with everything to lose. Gem, you’ve done it again!
Wow, great snippet. That last line was sure an attention-getter!
Delightful! I was smirking when I read the end of it! Can hardly wait to read the book, Gem! Well done. 🙂
Woah, he wants to play this game! I wonder if Eden will take the bait. The pacing of this snippet was well done. 🙂
Hey, whoa! You can’t leave us on a cliffhanger like that! I’d say that’d be worth the risk if it’s a chance to get away! Although, I get the bad feeling if she loses that means he’s going to get her as part of the pot… Great snippet!
Take this … well done, very interesting!
Hum, she is going to leave or was she bluffing with a winning hand?
